Project: We had to create a series of environmental studies for a made-up world, referencing various real-world historical sources.

I did underground fairies. Their city is built in the various hollows and tunnels in and around the roots of a dead tree. The idea was that in a modern day setting, their culture would largely be in decline and hiding. This particular group, the largest group of remaining fairies, would live in Anglesay, a small island off the north coast of Wales. It was interesting to think about how they would adapt to underground living, and also how to get a sense of decay and decline throughout.



This was a scene of daily life: a grub farm. Whereas traditional fairies are associated with things like birds or frogs or mice or other surface-dwelling animals, it's beetles, centipedes, pills bugs, moles, worms, and other underground fauna that the fairies live with now. (and btw fairies abhor the idea of caging animals: they only keep young animals in pens until they are big enough to look after themselves safely!)

The little girl has a pet maggot which I swear to god she is playing fetch with, and not about to hit!! (crap.) I figured if things like bugs are their pets now, than their equivalent of a puppy would be a maggot. Awww isn't that sweet.

Mushrooms grow everywhere on decaying organic matter. They are an important food source, and phosphorescent mushrooms help provide light.
