Description

John Watson, Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers

Based on the classic Mucha poster for the Brooklyn Exhibition. It was tricky to think of visual themes for John the same way I did for Molly and Sherlock. Eventually I decided that, being that John is “the blogger” in the BBC show and the narrator in (most of) the original stories, I would illustrate him with words, and worked in quotes other characters said to describe him as a major graphic element.

Prints are available here.

littlecrow is accomplished in both digital and traditional art. Although her piece "John Watson" follows a fairly predictable theme (fanart in the style of Alphonse Mucha) its attention to detail raises it above similar pieces and allows the viewer to relive the best lines and moments of the BBC character.

The drawing of John does a good job of capturing the style and lighting of Mucha's "Brooklyn Exhibition" piece it is based upon. The image emphasizes the thing for which John is known best: his writings on Sherlock Holmes.

The most impressive part of the piece would have to be the use of type. Great care was taken in choosing font sizes and weights. Altogether, the typographic composition creates a frame around John similar to Mucha's iconic floral arrangements.

For what it is, the piece is well thought out and visually pleasing. But while Alphonse Mucha is a fount of inspiration for most artists, tributes to his style have become rampant on dA in particular, and this critic would prefer to see some deviation from the trend.

Great work, littlecrow!
